Upon receiving his Ph.D. in seismology from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1983, he returned to his Alma Mater, the University of Toronto, to lead its Seismology Group. Since 1990 he has been a Senior Member of its Graduate Faculty, School of Graduate Studies. He arrived at the School of Ocean and Earth Science, Tongji University, in 2005, to lead its Global Seismology and Geodynamics Program. He is currently a professorial appointee at both Tongji University and the University of Toronto. His research interests are concerned with the physics and phenomenology of seismic wave propagation in elastic and inelastic wave media, seismic source discrimination, earthquake prediction, and in the continental geodynamics of East Asia.
