Welcome to the School of Ocean and Earth Science, Tongji University

building    The School of Ocean and Earth Science was founded in 2002, and can be traced back to the former Department of Marine Geology and Geophysics established in 1975. Since the academic degree systems restored in 1982, the subject of Marine Geology was the earliest one of having right to confer master degree, and became the only doctoral program among all domestic Universities and colleges in 1983. In 1992, 1993, the school was successively authorized to offer a Master degree in Applied Geophysics and a doctoral degree in Solid Geophysics. From 2004 to 2006, the school was successively authorized to offer Masters’ degrees in Mineral Survey and Exploration, Structural Geology, Quaternary Geology, Physical Oceanography, Marine Chemistry and Marine Biology, etc. The school has a total of 9 Master’s degree programs and 5 PHD programs. It consists of two departments, that is, Department of Marine Geology and Department of Geophysics, and awards two PHD degrees in Marine Science and Geophysics as national first-level disciplines.

The subject of Marine Geology earns the support of the national “Ninth Five-Year” plan, “Tenth Five-Year” plan and “211” project, as well as support of “Action Plan for Invigorating Education (985)” from the Ministry of Education. In 2000 and 2002, this subject was successively evaluated as the Key Discipline of Shanghai and National Key Discipline. In 2006, the State Key Laboratory of Marine Geology was established. Now, the school owns an outstanding discipline echelon leaded by Prof. Pinxian Wang , member of the Chinese Academy of Science. The School has 1 academician of  Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 honorary professor of the “Thousand Talents Program”, 2 professors of the “National Outstanding Youth Science Fund Project”, dozens of professors of the “Cross/New century Excellent Talents in University of the Ministry of Education, and dozens of Tongji Distinguished professors. The School boasts 34 professors, 29 of them are doctoral tutors, and also 15 associate professors.

The School holds a grand academic objective of researching environmental evolution and natural resources in oceans and neighboring continental regions,  makes efforts to achieve sea-land, ancient-modern integrations, cross-disciplinary integrations including geology, geophysics, geochemistry and technique collaborations of observation, experiment, and simulation. The School is exploring and developing new ideas, new approaches, and new methods in study of ocean and neighboring continental resources, as well as environment quantitative study. The School is aims at building a high-level talent’ base features in sea-land integration, an international marine geology frontier as well as one of the China seas and western Pacific marginal seas paleoenvironment and comprehensive geophysics research centers.

The school’s scientific research work mainly relies on the State Key Laboratory of Marine Geology. The Laboratory owns several large analytic instruments including XRF Core Scanner, Stable Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer, Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope, Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry, Gas Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer, Geophysical Data Processing System, etc. At present, the school undertakes national “973” and “863” programs, as well research projects supported by National Nature and Science Foundation of China. In 1999, the successful implementation of the South China Sea Ocean Drilling Project, leaded by academician Prof.Pinxian Wang as the chief scientist, helps the study of deep sea research in Tongji University ranks among the world’s most advanced level. Now, we are actively promoting the second South China Sea Ocean Drilling Project, with an aim to foster a contingent of deep sea scientists in China.
