Marine Geology (Master and Phd)

The major of Marine Geology was successively evaluated as “Key Discipline of Shanghai” and “National Key Discipline” in 2000 and 2002, and gets the support of “211” project and “985” project by the Ministry of Education. In 1999, the successful implementation of the South China Sea Ocean Drilling Project, leaded by academician Prof. Pinxian Wang as the chief scientist, helps the study of deep sea research in Tongji University ranks among the world’s most advanced level.This major boasts 18 professors, 15 of them are doctoral tutors, 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 professor of Cheung Kong Scholars Programme, 2 National Science Fund for Distinguished Yong Scholars. This research group is made up of well-known professors, and gets the NSFC Fund for Creative Research Group. Now, they are undertaking national “973” program, the NSFC project, etc.Under the principle of “earth system science”, this group holds a grand objective of  researching environmental evolution and natural resources in oceans and neighboring continental regions, makes efforts to achieve sea-land, ancient-modern integrations, cross-disciplinary integrations including geology, geophysics, geochemistry and technique collaborations of observation, experiment, and simulation. The group is aims at building a high-level talent’ base features in sea-land integration, an international marine geology frontier as well as one of the China seas and western Pacific marginal seas paleoenvironment and comprehensive geophysics research centers.

Marine Biology (Master and Phd)

Since approved, this major wins the priority support of “211” project and “985” project by Ministry of Education. Now, this research group has 4 teachers, 2 of them are doctoral tutors.The major is established under the principle of the “earth system science”, combining the molecular biology, organic geochemistry and the isotopic techniques together, and explore the new cross on the molecular level in the earth sciences and life sciences. This major features in: a high starting point, new major, interdisciplinary, and international standard. The goal of this major is becoming a research and talents’ training center for deep marine biology study in China.   

Marine Chemistry (Master and Phd)

Since approved, this major wins the priority support of “211” project and “985” project by Ministry of Education. Now, this research group has 7 teachers, 2 of them are doctoral tutors. It undertakes national “863” programme, the NSFC project, topics in China Ocean project, etc.Under the principle of “earth system science”, this major holds an objective of researching marine chemistry, the process of geochemistry modernization and related mechanism, applies a multidisciplinary (Applied Chemistry, Geology, Biology, etc) theory and method. This group tries to combine three ways observations (high-grade sea field (in situ) detection, indoor simulation experiment and theory analysis), emphasis the significance of knowledge’ pioneering and innovation, with aim to build a high-level talents training center, an international marine chemistry study center features in technology research and scientific innovation.

Geophysics (Master, Phd)

The major of geophysics was granted the authority for Master’s degree in 1993, while the doctor’s degree granted in 1998. One of the founders of this major is Prof. Zaitian Ma, a famous geophysicist, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. There are 10 professors and 10 associate professors, among them 9 professors are doctoral tutors. In addition, a lot of domestic and international famous scholars and professors hold concurrent posts, such as Prof. Guangding Liu, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. This research group forms high-level talents’ training and research center features in comprehensive study of complex medium seismic wave propagation and imaging, geophysics data and earth information science. For many years, this research group has achieved a series of scientific results on earthquake, heavy magnetic, electromagnetic and geophysical logging, etc, and applies all these new methods and technology on studies like oil, gas and solid mineral resources exploration, the planet’s internal structure, earth dynamics, earthquake prediction, engineering geophysical and paleoenvironment changes in sea-land areas. The research group undertakes several national research programs, including 2 NSFC projects, 2 “973” projects, 6 “863” projects, etc, as well as some provincial key projects on oil, gas resources exploration. This discipline has awarded the “Kah Kee” Earth Science Prize, and the second prize of National Science and Technology Development, three first prizes, 4 second prizes and 7 third prizes of provincial Science and Technology Development. By now, about 300 masters and doctors have been cultivated in this discipline.Furthermore, this research group owns earthquake simulation and image analysis room and petrophysical analysis room in the Laboratory. They have 512 nuclear HP blade server, 32 GPU AMAX high performance computing server, dozens of geophysical data processing and interpretation workstations, rock hole - permeability - electric - ultrasonic measurement system, broadband flow seismic array, AOU - 06 and V - 5 multi-functions electric prospecting instrument, EKKO - IV geological radar detector, gravimeter, magnetometer, thermal conductivity and susceptibility measurement system, etc. In geographical information science, the research group owns ArcCIS, ERDAS, PCI, GeoStar, MapGIS and other software systems of remote sensing and geographic information system.

Structure Geology  (Master, Phd)

The Master’s degree program of structure geology was established by late Prof. Xia Zhu, a famous geologist, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences. This major has 3 professors, and 2 lecturers. Under the principle of Prof. Xia Zhu’s active plate tectonic theory, the research interests of this group including geological historical period and modern geological process, basin-range coupling, comparison study on ocean and land effects. They adopt various approaches including geology and geophysics, geology and geochemistry, qualitative and quantitative methods. The research group focuses on regional-local, deep-shallow, macro-micro, sedimentary basin-orogenic belt, sedimentary-structure, and other coupling relations. Based on previous research studies, this group has built academic relationships with universities and research institutions all over the world, and has undertaken many national and provincial large and medium-sized research projects. The research interests including: (1) basin and orogenic belt structure and tectonic evolution; (2) the continental margin structure; (3) uplift& exhumation of the orogen; (4) basin - range coupling process; (5) geochemistry of HP/UHP metamophism; (6) basin structure - thermal evolution; (7) tectonic stress field analysis and simulation; (8) relations of structure and oil and gas accumulation, etc. This group has trained at least 30 masters all over the world.

Quaternary Geology

Global change has become a hot topic in earth science study in 21st century, and has drawn the whole society’s attention. The research group focuses on global changes, studies the operation mechanism, varying patterns, changing control mechanism of the earth system(natural and man-made), and predicts future development trends. Studies on global changes focus on planet scale, and regard the earth’s atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere as an organic global system. Above are the key contents of earth system science as well as the quaternary geology.This research group has 2 professors and doctoral tutors, as well as part-time professors who are well-known scholars all over the world. In addition, this major has built a close relationship with marine geology. This group has undertaken many large research projects, including “deep sea process and records in earth spheres’ interaction” of national 973 project, the NSFC projects, etc. This group has build academic relationships with several overseas universities and institutions, and has signed research programmes and co-training plans with other countries including UK, Australia, Netherland, Japan, and France. The scientific activities mainly rely on the State Key Laboratory of Marine Science. This laboratory is equipped with advanced instruments on quaternary geology and past global changes’ studies.      

Geodetection and Information Technology

The major of Geodetection and Information Technology, one of the level-II disciplines, subordinates to Geology Resources and Geology Engineering, one of the level-I disciplines. This major was granted the gift of Master’s degree program in 2006. There are 5 professors and 6 associate professors, among them 3 professors are doctoral tutors. Besides, a lot of domestic and international famous scholars hold the part-time job professors and professors emeritus. The major takes the land and ocean oil-gas resource exploration, geo-information processing, oceanic deposit dynamics and ocean acoustics as the main characteristic. Many funds such as “863” project, national science fund and also funds from petroleum industry and related ministries have been improving the level of scientific research and widely recognized by the academic and industry community. It has developed cooperative relation through some research projects with many foreign countries and students' exchange program with America, England, French, Australia etc. There have been the seismic imaging and digital modeling laboratory, rock physics laboratory with 50 nodes PC cluster system, SGI parallel computer processing system, several SUN geophysical data interpretation workstation, multifunction electrical prospecting instrument and other advanced equipments in this group. An RS&GPS laboratory and GIS laboratory were set up and a series of high performance high-spectrometers were equipped, as well as GPS receiver.


Mineral Resource Prospecting and Exploration

This major was empowered the master's degree of Survey and Exploration of Mineral and Ore. College of Ocean and Earth Science, Tongji University, is established in 2002 and its former is Ocean Geology and Geophysics. This major welcomed its first students and gained the authorization of the master’s degree in 2003. There are 7 professors, among which there are 4 tutors of doctor, and 6 vice- professors in this subject, forming a study group that have innovational ability. This subject features the combination of ocean and continent and aims at exploration of oil and gas. Based on the past research, it has set up scientific connection with universities and research institutes in many countries and has developed cooperative research projects with many foreign countries, such as America, England, Germany, and Australia et al. More than ten large and middle scale research projects, such as the “Ninth-five years” and “Tenth-five years” scientific key projects and “973” projects in China, were charged by the group. In addition, 10 scientific and research monographs were publicly printed, 9 projects had been honored by the province and ministry and about 150 papers have been published in recent 5 years.At the beginning that the subject was founded, the students for master’s degree were recruited in the direction of reservoir description in past 4 years and the students for doctor degree in the petroleum geology were continuously recruited in the major of marine geology. There are many large instruments, such as stable isotope mass spectrographs, environmental scan electron microscopes, laser granularity analysis, organic element analysis, figure processors, X radial diffraction, MPV-SP spectrophotometers and so on. Lots of masters and doctors are cultivated from different places of our country.
