MGLAB Signs Memorandum of Understanding with STMKG, Indonesia

On May 20, 2025, the State Key Laboratory of Marine Geology at Tongji University (MGLAB) and the State College of Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (STMKG) of Indonesia held a signing ceremony for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This milestone marks a significant step forward in educational and scientific collaboration between the two institutions. Looking ahead, both parties are committed to working together to deepen cooperation across multiple levels and research fields.

Attending the ceremony were STMKG President Deni Septiadi, Head of the Department of Geophysics Iman Suardi, and Dr. Muzli, along with MGLAB Director Prof. Liu Zhifei, Prof. Yu Youqiang, Prof. Xue Mei, Prof. Cheng Yifang, Dr. Huang Hui, and Assistant Prof. Sun Yaochong, as well as faculty and students from Tongji University.

The ceremony began with Prof. Yu Youqiang introducing the guests from both institutions. President Deni Septiadi then provided an overview of STMKG and its research focus, emphasizing the importance of geophysical studies in marine environmental monitoring and disaster mitigation across the Indonesian archipelago. He also expressed strong interest in collaborating with MGLAB in areas such as natural seismology.

Prof. Liu Zhifei warmly welcomed the STMKG delegation on behalf of MGLAB. He reviewed MGLAB’s past collaborative efforts in Southeast Asia and introduced the laboratory’s research platforms and academic strengths. He noted that the collaboration would leverage Tongji University’s well-established international network in marine sciences and its state-of-the-art research infrastructure. The partnership will focus on multi-scale studies ranging from shallow subsurface to deep Earth processes, promoting both scientific advancement and joint graduate training. Prof. Liu expressed high expectations for establishing a long-term, stable, and in-depth partnership with STMKG in the field of geophysics and beyond.

During the signing session, President Deni Septiadi and Director Liu Zhifei formally signed the MoU on behalf of their respective institutions. Both sides emphasized that this agreement would serve as a solid foundation for future collaboration, aiming to promote practical cooperation in research, education, and talent development through efficient and innovative initiatives.

The signing of this MoU officially launches academic and talent exchange between MGLAB and STMKG. In the future, the two institutions will continue to build on their respective strengths, deepen mutual understanding, and work toward shared goals. Through complementary collaboration, they aim to bring new vitality to Earth science research and education across the region.
