Welcome to the School of Ocean and Earth Science, Tongji University

Master and PhD program

Marine Science

Acquiring the qualification to confer master’s degree in 1978, it was the first and only then institution in 1984 to accept graduate students for a doctoral degree in marine geology in China. In 1991, a marine science postdoctoral research station was established, and in 1992, a Key Laboratory of Marine Geology was nominated by the Ministry of Education of China, which was upgraded under state approval into a State Key Laboratory in 2005. Due to its excellent performances in scientific researches, the marine science discipline at Tongji University was nominated one of the most important disciplines by Shanghai Municipal Government in 1999, and later became a key discipline nominated by the central government in 2002. In 2005, the program acquired the qualification to confer doctoral degree in marine science.

The discipline of marine science hosts many outstanding professionals and is equipped with advanced teaching and research instruments. Its current faculty members include: 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 4 Distinguished Young Scholars of the National Science Foundation of China, 19 professors and 8 associate professors, and has 1 Creative Research Group of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). Several world famous marine scientists serve as adjunct professors or honored professors. In the past years, this discipline has been well funded by both national and international scientific foundations. It has forged strong connection with dozens of universities and institutions around the world, and has carried out joint projects with Germany, France, Australia, USA, the Netherlands, Italia, Japan, Russia, etc. In recent years, we have undertaken three “973 Program” projects (National Basic Research Program of China), 30 Key Projects of NSFC and over 100 other national research projects, and have published several hundred SCI-indexed papers in Nature, Nature Geoscience and other international journals. In February 2016, approved by the National Development and Reform Commission of China, our discipline takes the leading role to construct the major science infrastructure project “National Long-term Seafloor Scientific Observation System”. Listed as one of China’s top disciplines in marine science concerning its teaching and research achievements, this discipline has won dozens of national and provincial awards.

Research Orientations:

1. Marine geology (Paleoceanography, Marine Sedimentology, Continental margin tectonics, basin and Petroleum Geology, etc.)

2. Marine Chemistry (Chemical oceanography, Marine geochemistry, Experimental geochemistry, etc.)

3. Marine Biology (Geomicrobiology, Marine organic geochemistry, etc.)

4. Physical oceanography (Multi-scale oceanic motions, Sediment dynamics)

5. Marine technology (Marine Information Technology, Marine Sensing Technology )

The program started to confer master’s degree in geophysics in 1993, and doctor’s degree in geophysics in 1998. In 2010, the program acquired the qualification to confer doctoral degree in geophysics. One of the founders of this major is professor Ma Zaitian, who was a famous geophysicist and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The department of geophysics currently owns 14 full-time professors and 6 associate professors, among whom 16 are also doctoral program supervisors and 16 are master's supervisors.

Many famous scholars also hold adjunct professor posts here. The program has established several advanced laboratories in seismic imaging & modeling, rock physics, paleomagnetism and earthquake seismology and geodynamics, and is equipped with 512 cores HP blade server, 1008 cores IBM high performance computing server, geophysical data processing and interpretation workstations, portable broadband seismic array, active source Ocean Bottom Seismograph (OBS), electromagnetic instrument, gravimeter, magnetometer, ground penetrating radar and Rock Ultrasound and Porosimetry under high temperature and pressure, thermal conductivity and magnetic susceptibility measurement systems.

The department of geophysics has achieved fast development over the past twenty years with strong supports from both central and municipal government, including national Project 211 as well as Project 985 and is elected as one of the Summit Disciplines of Shanghai. It has undertaken a series of national key research programs such as the National Natural Science Foundation programs and the national “973” and “863” programs.

Nearly 300 MS and PhD degrees have been granted to our students who have won lots of national and provincial awards. The strength of the department also lies in its integration of both ocean and land studies. During its 30 years of development, especially with the help of national “985” and “211”programs from the Ministry of Education, the department has laid a good foundation for further investigation in seismic migration and numerical modeling in complex media, integrated geophysics, earthquake seismology, geodynamics and space physics. The department is committing itself to be an important center for studies of geological structures, resources and environments in the west Pacific area.

Research Orientations:

1. Reflection seismology

2. Integrated geophysics

3. Marine geophysics and geodynamics

4. Reservoir geophysics

5. Space physics
