From August 31 to September 4, 2026, the School of Ocean and Earth Science at Tongji University, in collaboration with TotalEnergies, successfully held the “Oil and Gas Exploration and Development and Energy Transition” Geophysics Short Course. The five-day course drew participants from Tongji University’s undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs, as well as students in related disciplines from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhejiang University, China University of Petroleum (Beijing), China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), and other universities.
The opening ceremony of the short course was chaired by Professor ZHAO Luanxiao of the School of Ocean and Earth Science. Professor LIU Yuzhu, Vice Dean of the School, delivered remarks and looked forward to the School and TotalEnergies continuing to deepen industry-university-research exchange and cooperation. YU Chenxin, Director of Communications and Corporate Social Responsibility at TotalEnergies China, was invited to attend and deliver remarks. He fully affirmed the core supporting role of geophysical technology in conventional oil and gas exploration and new energy development, highly recognized the School of Ocean and Earth Science for its strengths in discipline development and achievements in talent cultivation, and stated that the course had provided a high-quality platform for professional learning and academic exchange for young students.
The course was taught entirely in person and in English by Professor Dominique Amilhon, a senior geophysical exploration expert from TotalEnergies. The course covered not only conventional oil and gas exploration, block evaluation, drilling monitoring, and oilfield development, but also incorporated practical geophysical application scenarios in emerging energy fields such as carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), geothermal resource development, and offshore wind power. During the course, participants were focused and engaged, actively taking part in classroom interaction and case discussions, creating a strong atmosphere of faculty-student exchange.
At the closing session, Professor Dominique Amilhon and Professor ZHAO Luanxiao jointly presented certificates of completion bearing the official logos of both Tongji University and TotalEnergies to participants who successfully completed all coursework, bringing the short course to a successful conclusion.
