School of Ocean and Earth Science Delegation visited Indonesia

From September 11 to 13, a delegation led by Prof. Zhimin Jian, dean of School of Ocean and Earth Science and Prof. Zhifei Liu, director of State Key Laboratory of Marine Geology paid an official visit to Indonesia National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Bandung Advanced Science and Creative Engineering Space (BASICS) and universities in Indonesia. Dr. Nugroho Dwi Hananto, the Director of Research Vessel Management of BRIN, welcomed the delegation. Scientific collaborations among nations to address common problems is well-established, and new partnerships were formed and important knowledge exchanged.

Director Nugroho Dwi Hananto extended a warm welcome to the visiting delegation and Dr. Noor Cahyo D. Aryanto briefly reviews the organization of BRIN, the research achievements of cooperation in the past and the upcoming joint marine research.

Prof. Zhifei Liu gave a detailed presentation to BRIN on ocean science at Tongji University, furthermore, he highlighted the importance of multilateral cooperation in ocean drilling in the South China Sea and new initiatives of IODP Sunda Shelf drilling project. During the meeting, Dr. Shouting Tuo briefed the attendees about the history of International Conference on Asian Marine Geology (ICAMG) and extended a sincere hope that Indonesia could host the next ICAMG.

On the meeting between BASICS and the delegation, the delegation calls on both sides to continue to strengthen exchanges and cooperation between the two research institutions in multiple fields of marine science, promote the implementation of joint cruises, and explore new directions for future research cooperation. Both sides had a discussion on common interest and agreed to re-sign the memorandums of understanding on further collaboration.

The delegation also visited University Trisakti in Jakarta and Padjadjaran University in Bandung. The two sides conducted in-depth discussions and sought to strengthen the university’s ties on exchanges among teachers and students and potential cooperation in the academic fields.

This visit provides a good communication platform to promote the understanding of experts from both sides, confirm the organizing of Asian Marine Geology Conference and bolster international education exchanges, and lays a solid foundation for the next step of carrying out Sunda Shelf drilling cruise and deepening cooperation between China and Indonesia.
